Volvo hybrid bus with Siemens fast-charging system starts service in Hamburg

Officially launched at the International IAA Commercial Vehicles show, the Volvo 7900 Electric Hybrid buses equipped with a Siemens fast charging systems has taken its maiden tour in Hamburg, where it will be deployed from December on the 109 service. The Volvo 7900 Electric Hybrid has an electric hybrid powertrain that combines a four-cylinder diesel 240 hp (177 kW) with an electric motor of 150 kW. The latter receives energy from a lithium ion battery of 19 kWh total storage capacity, this allows travel in electric mode a... [Lire la suite]

Why The Netherlands Is Europe’s Hub For E-Vehicles

The Netherlands is among the countries with the highest electric vehicle market penetration in the world. As of August 2014, a total of 40,880 highway legal plug-in electric vehicles were registered in the Netherlands, comprising the second-largest fleet per capita in the world after Norway. It’s no wonder, considering the country’s progressive policies, affinity for innovation, and forward-thinking, environmentally-conscious consumers. The Dutch government, too, is dedicated to a greener future for transportation: as part of its... [Lire la suite]

New batteries charge 70 percent in 2 minutes

Using a titanium dioxide gel, researchers make a battery that could one day allow electric cars to fuel up as fast as their gas-guzzling cousins.Current lithium ion batteries have graphite anodes. Instead of graphite, the team at NTU used a titanium dioxide gel they developed that dramatically speeds up the chemical reaction that takes place in the battery, meaning it can charge much faster. The researchers see the technology as especially valuable in improving the use of electric cars. "This next generation of lithium ion batteries... [Lire la suite]

Energy Storage Market toHit $50Billion by 2020 (Lux Research)

The global energy storage market will rise to $50 billion by the year 2020, according to Lux Research — with a predicted compound annual growth rate of 8% until then. Much of the predicted rise will be in “transportation applications,” which will rise to $21 billion by 2020, according to Lux Research. Narrowing the gap between that portion of the market and the portion represented by electronics — which is predicted to rise to $27 billion by 2020. The remainder will be filled out by “stationary applications” — which are expected to... [Lire la suite]

What's Next For Magnesium-Ion V+Batteries: Molecular Foundry Coughs Up A Clue

For those of you new to the topic, lithium-ion is currently the gold standard for electric vehicle batteries among many other applications (lithium is a soft metal, and ion refers to a charged atom or molecule). Just ask our good friends over at Tesla Motors, they’ll tell you how good Li-ion batteries are. However, we’ve been catching wind of some new developments in Mg-ion batteries here and there, and Toyota, for one, has been in hot pursuit of the technology for electric vehicle batteries. As described in the Berkeley Lab’s... [Lire la suite]

Drives System Saves Space and Weight in Electric Cars

Siemens has developed a solution for integrating an electric car’s motor and inverter in a single housing. Until now, the motor and the inverter, which converts the battery’s direct current into alternating current for the motor, were two separate components. The new integrated drive unit saves space, reduces weight, and cuts costs. The solution’s key feature is the use of a common cooling system for both components. This ensures that the inverter’s power electronics don’t get too hot despite their proximity to the electric motor, and... [Lire la suite]

China Electric Car Flying

Electric car sales in China were quite lame last year, but things have really been picking up this year, and September just set a new record that even compares with US electric car sales, which are routinely the highest in the world. Nonetheless, there’s still a long way to go, as electric cars’ share of the overall automobile market in China was just 0.33%. That’s about 4 times more than the 0.08% it was last September, but it’s still a tiny portion of the market. Les ventes de voitures électriques en Chine étaient assez calme... [Lire la suite]
